Titanic: The Unfolding Story |
It is a story that's familiar to everyone. At the time of its launch, the RMS Titanic was the largest ship ever built and when she set sail on her maiden voyage in 1912 there were 2,227 people on board. Four days into the crossing the Titanic hit an iceberg; less than three hours later the ship sank and 1,517 people lost their lives. These are the barebones of what was a dramatic event - and what many of us believe to be the truth of the Titanic's first and last voyage is what we have learned from Hollywood movies, all of which have told the story in their own way. Titanic- The Unfolding Story as told by The Daily Mirror offers a unique insight into this terrible, yet endlessly fascinating, disaster. It tells the whole story: from the commissioning of the Titanic and her sister ship the Olympic following their construction, launches and maiden voyages, through to the Titanic's demise, the immediate aftermath, and the very public enquiries on both sides of the Atlantic. Based on the words of contemporary newspaper reports the story comes alive as it never has before. The depth of detail is fascinating, revealing fresh insights into a tragedy that continues to captivate us today. Use of contemporary newspaper photography and iconic images all help to make this book one of a kind. Published by Haynes Publishing

When Boxing Was Boxing |
Remember a time when boxing ruled the sporting world? When the great and the good of the fight game were the biggest stars of their day, and when a major bout was a global event that captivated and enthralled people on almost every continent - when the main event was the event? When Boxing Was Boxing is a photographic celebration of the sport's heyday. It's a beautifully illustrated tribute to an age when the noble art was a little more dignified, and a little less preoccupied with money and the politics of sport. It's about a time when there weren't quite so many governing bodies, nor multiple world 'champions' viewed only by tiny audiences on pay-per-view channels; a time when boxing was once regarded as the pinnacle of professional sporting endeavour, and not just a lucrative arm of the leisure and entertainment business. This is no whitewash of boxing history. As the chapters show, the toughest game has an often murky past. But in its portrayal of the great pugilists and their finest bouts, the famous arenas and the colourful characters, When Boxing Was Boxing brings to vivid life the atmosphere, raw spectacle and sheer excitement of this most brutal yet compelling of sporting theatre. With special features on the sport's grassroots, its particular customs, culture and curiosities, and its more lighthearted moments, this is an affectionate and wonderfully nostalgic look at a time when boxing really was boxing. Denis Law: My Life In Football |
When Denis Law signed for Manchester United from Torino for a British record fee of GBP115,000 in 1962, even at the age of 22 he had already established himself as one of the world's great forwards. No wonder his arrival at United sparked a revival in the club's fortunes, as they won the FA Cup in his first campaign. In his second season, 1963-64, he scored 46 goals - a club record that stands to this day - and became European Footballer of the Year. He then helped United to league titles in two of the next three terms, delivering 39 and 25 goals respectively. Now, having reached 70 years old, Denis looks back on his remarkable career and reflects on both the highs and the lows from his time on the pitch and beyond, as captured in lavishly reproduced photographs, many of them in full colour. Those Were The Games |
Anyone interested in football has memories of significant games, when their team played brilliantly (or even lost spectacularly). Some might be the greatest games they've ever watched - games not necessarily involving the team they support - others might be 'a first', while some may be football matches that have been spoken about by an older generation, held up as examples of the way football used to be. Those Were the Games is all about fascinating football matches from the last 100 years. Who was Max Seeburg? He became the first ever foreign profession1923 footballer to play for an English club when he turned out for Spurs against hull City in 1908. The 'White Horse' Cup Final of 1923, but who played who? Five years later Newcastle United beat Aston Villa 7-5 in a remarkable fixture at St James' Park. Were you among the 146,422 people who paid to watch Celtic beat Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final in 1937? Everyone now takes floodlights for granted, but what was the first game to be played entirely under lights and what was the score? It was Portsmouth against Newcastle United way back in 1956 but you'll have to buy the book to find out more. Published by Haynes Publishing

And God Created Burton |
From the Inside Flap A sweeping saga spanning 1898 to 1984 stretching from the mining fields of South Wales to the film sets of Hollywood and from the playhouses of Cardiff to the grand theatres of Broadway - this new and far reaching biography rakes over the coals of the life of Britain's greatest ever actor, Richard Burton. And how one extraordinary man had three fathers, three mothers, seven brothers, six sisters and four wives, and how he loved them all. And how that man earned US$75 million from the start of his career in 1951 to when he died in 1984; the equivalent of US$1.5 billion in today's money, making him the highest-paid actor in Hollywood history. From the Back Cover And God Created Burton is the first complete biography of the greatest Welshman ever to have lived. The man conquered Hollywood like no other British actor, before or since. His achievements were considered all the greater as they were accomplished in the era of such great British actors as Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud as well as great American stars such as Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable and Cary Grant. Burton's achievement was even more pronounced as his prowess uniquely spanned theatre, film and television unlike any other actor before him. In the end, he became a genuine legend in his own lifetime and in the mid-sixties, for one year, he stood at the very pinnacle of Hollywood as the world's most bankable actor. He also loved and lost some the most beautiful and talented actresses of the era, including Elizabeth Taylor, Claire Bloom and Susan Strasberg. But he could have achieved even more if it had not been for his addiction to alcohol, a fate inherited from his father and which stayed with him right to the end of his days, eventually killing him and tarnishing an otherwise extraordinary career. The Blitz - An Illustrated History |
The winter of 1940-41 was the season of the Blitz. From St Paul's Cathedral to the East End, from the very heart of the capital to the cities of the midlands, throughout the length and breadth of the land the bombs rained down as Germany attempted to bludgeon Britain into submission. As the civilian populations below cowered in their shelters or manned the fire services there could be no doubt that this was an island under siege. Drawing exclusively on the photo archive of The Daily Mirror newspaper this volume brings to life this extraordinary period in British history. Remarkably a number of these images have never seen the light of day before thanks to wartime censors and now 70 years after the fact they reveal for the first time the harsh realities of life and death during the Blitz. Written by Gavin Mortimer, who has previously published "The Longest Night: Voices from the London Blitz (Orion 2005)", this book weaves together these incredible images with newspaper articles, diary entries and first-hand accounts to create a compelling chronological account of Britain's darkest and most difficult period in her long history.
